Are you after the perfect body? Are you on a strict diet? Controlling everything you eat? Exercising for hours a day?

Well comfort can help.

Yep, I did that too. Because for me, I thought once I got that perfect body, I thought, then I’d be happy.

The thing about being so strict is that it’s a double-edged sword:

PRO: You get amazing results!

CON: It’s exhausting.

To be always strict and in control is a full-time job in itself. And like any job, we’re bound to make a mistake. Same goes with our diet and exercise: eventually we’ll “slip”.

Let me explain a slip. A slip is when you do something that isn’t on your perfect diet agenda.

It’s like everything is going fine, but then suddenly, BAM! Your day goes from good to bad. You’re in freefall.

How do you regain control? Well, with something that feels good. For me, this was food.

Now you’re probably thinking, what’s so wrong with having a cookie or two to make yourself feel better? If you are, then now’s a good time to understand the difference between doing things to comfort ourselves versus to numb ourselves.

COMFORT BEHAVIOURS

When Super Mario went over a mushroom he grew in power right? So what are the things that do that for you? These are your comfort behaviours. They are the behaviours that make you feel recharged and rejuvenated after you’ve done them. Have you previously experienced a comfort behaviour?

NUMBING BEHAVIOURS

What are the behaviours that may feel good at the time, but also suck the life out of you? That leaves you numb, empty, and void of feeling? Like being next to a Dementor.

What can you do about them?

Well, it’s complicated, but to give you a jump start ask yourself: what is the difference between the thoughts and feelings that prompt you to choose either a comfort or numbing behaviour?

The answer will be more complicated than you think… so give yourself plenty of time and space.
